How to test the performance of fiber optic splitters?

2025-07-31

The following are detailed steps and key indicators for testing the performance of fiber optic splitters, combining industry standards and practical tips:

I. Pre-Test Preparation
Equipment List
  • Light source (1310nm/1550nm dual wavelength), optical power meter (resolution 0.001 dB), OTDR (for reflection event detection).
  • Cleaning tools (alcohol wipes, fiber cleaning pen) and standard connectors (to ensure interface matching).
Environmental Requirements

Temperature should be maintained at 23°C ± 5°C and humidity < 85% to avoid test deviations.

II. Core Performance Test Items
Insertion Loss Test

Measure the input/output power difference using the shear method according to IEC 61300-3-2. The typical value should be ≤ 0.3 dB (1310/1550nm wavelengths).

The splitting ratio error is allowed to be ±5% (using a 1*8 splitter as an example).

Return Loss Test

Using the OTDR reflectometry method (IEC 61300-3-6), a PC endface ≥55 dB and an APC endface ≥60 dB are considered acceptable.

Uniformity Verification

Measure the loss of each output port sequentially; the difference should be ≤0.8 dB (PLC model).

Temperature Stability Test

Cyclic testing within the -40°C to +75°C range ensures loss change of ≤0.5 dB.

III. Common Problems and Solutions
  • Mechanical Damage: If the plug falls off or the fiber breaks after the tensile test, the package strength should be checked.
  • High-Temperature Failure: If the housing is deformed after the damp-heat test, optical performance may exceed the specified value.
  • Reflection Interference: If ghosting occurs on the OTDR trace, shorten the pulse width or increase the attenuation.
IV. Standards and Equipment Reference

Test Standards: YD/T 2000.1-2014 (PLC splitters), ISO/IEC 14763-3 (splitting ratio).

Recommended equipment: EXFO FTB-200 (loss test), Yokogawa AQ2200 (splitting ratio analysis).

The above process allows for a comprehensive evaluation of splitter performance. We recommend obtaining a CMA/CNAS certification report from a third-party organization (such as the Beijing Inspection and Quarantine Institute).
